Apple TV or my…old computer?
What’s all the fuss about the Apple TV? The Apple TV, in my humble opinion, is just a stripped out computer.
I for one have a computer (let me know if u want to know the specs!!) at home that connects to the HDTV through a DVI port. My HDTV supports multiple resolutions and I am extremely happy with the quality. In addition I have a 60 GB hard disk as against the 40 GB that the Apple TV has.
Now, dont worry..you can connect most computers to your TV. For info on how to connect your computer to your TV click here.
Now, what is the advantage of having an Apple TV..I guess to stream videos from 5 different computers. In addition it seems like the AppleTV can play anything an iPod can. Which is probably not too bad, except for all my DivX videos.
Now lets look at their value proposition. Play youtube videos/ internet content on your TV. Now personally I watch TV shows and movies on my TV. Most things I want are available on DVD and really don’t cost that much. Watching youtube content on a HDTV does not really strike me as an optimum TV experience. Again who knows, Ive been wrong before.
Also a parting question…how many people actually have TV’s with HDMI/component video? And I’m really not sure if any adapters exist for older TV’s.
So the winner: In less than one round..MY COMPUTER (or for that matter any computer!!)
