Top 5 Gadgets to Avoid, from AOL (via SmartMoney.com)

An excellent breakdown for the average consumer of what thing to hold off on buying for now. This is what we've been saying for a while.

When flipping through ye ole RSS feeder, I saw Gizmodo linked to this AOL list of things consumers should hold off on buying for now (it is actually from SmartMoney.com's Stacey L. Bradford). It's a great list with great reasoning behind it, I just wanted to add my take on the list.

  1. High Definition DVD Players
      • Oh yeah, no point in picking up one of these for years and years.  Your DVD player broke? Go buy another DVD player for $40 that'll probably have more features than the one that just crapped out. Then 2-3 years from now when the $40 jobbie dies, go buy another DVD player. Hi-Def video will grow and eventually become dominant, but it'll be a long time coming. Save your money until 1) everyone else has one, 2) you have 20 discs but nothing to view them on, and 3) the market decides which format is the winner (as everyone has said, "Remember VHS vs BETA?").
  2. PlayStation 3
      • I'm sort of 50/50 on this one.  Personally, I have a PS2 and I think I'm going to wait for the next generation consoles to come out.  I like gaming but I'm way past the age that I need what's current. If you or someone in you house is a big gamer, there no harm in getting the PS3 now since it's reported to play most of the PS2 games. Stacey's concern is the lack of games, but most gamers take that into account before hand.  If you're new to gaming and think the PS3 is for you, you may want to hold off and see what the rumored next version Xbox 360 is all about.
  3. 'Draft N' Wireless Routers
      •  Ummmmm .... uh ... yeah. That uh, "Draft N" wireless, mmm  thingys.  It ... well, supposedly ...really blows away the Draft M ones that are, well, totally lame.  So.... yeah like, right, don't get it?  (i.e. If you don't know what a technology is, don't take a salesperson's word for it).
  4. Windows Vista Operating System
      •  Well I won't go over this one again.  You can read my opinion, in chronological order here, here, here, and here. The Reader's Digest version is this: keep your XP machine for as long as possible, get Vista on a new machine.
  5. 10 Megapixel Digital Camera
      •  I waited until 2004 to switch to digital photography.  Since then I've taken every shot at 6 megapixels.  That's way more precision than you'd need to print a high-quality 8x10, but not a complete storage eater (2nd point is debatable).  10MP? Yeah, that'll come in handy when you need to print out a picture to wallpaper the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.  Otherwise it is a useless feature that'll hog storage and you'll be force to delete photos that you may regret getting rid of years from now. If you're in the market for a digital camera, make a list of all the other must-have features you need. Most newer models are have the megapixel muscle you'll need.
