A brief history of USB (and a look at the future).
This cat Patrick McFarland put up on his blog a nice brief history of USB and what he foresees as the problems in the future.
Why Powered USB Is Needed, Part 1: The Short History of USB
Why Powered USB Is Needed, Part 2: The Future of USBThis is the kind of explanations of technology we see as key for consumers at large. Cheers to Patrick McFarland and his blog Ad Terras Per Aspera (which I think means "to land, with difficulties" or possibly "to Earth, with difficulties.")

One of the Hunacre engineers, Ralph Smith, still has the original prototype. The original patent for the upstream/downstream concept is in the name of the engineers of the Hunacre project.
Intel shut the Hunacre project down in 1991. Intel didn't see the USB's future potential, and the credit for it's creation has been given to others. - The design of USB is standardized by the USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF), an industry standards body incorporating leading companies from the computer and electronics industries. Notable members have included Agere (now merged with LSI Corporation), Apple Inc., Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Microsoft and NEC.
