[Searchology] Google now searches Universally...
| "From my perspective, search needs to be easy. [And with Google,] search is easy," said Marissa. Google VP of Search Products & User Experience Marissa Mayer announced the company's new search engine dubbed the "Universal Search". Now search results will combine both text, images and video content displayed by relevancy. This new Universal Search is already the current default search engine and there's no turning back: the "classic" text search results are gone forever. If you'd done the search in 1997, you would have gotten sites for job hunters and sites about a bunch of random guys named Steve. Search has come a long way. |

Here are some of the very interesting and intriguingly cool features of [Search]ology:
- New hardware architecture: New hardware infrastructure i.e. new servers for the various "vertical" search indexes like Images, Video, News, Local, etc;
- Contextual navigation links: These are links to other Google search indexes (Blog, Book, Groups,Code...) and that enable a user to drill down into a particular technical information/vertical index... thus "contextual".
- The universal navigation bar sits on top of the Google homepage as well as all pages of user facing products and allows to easily navigate between the different Google products And for all the other Google products, you can still click on the "More" link and they will appear on a drop-down menu.
- The Google Experimental web site: With this new site hosted under Google Labs, all users can now see the latest user interface experiments.
Search, search and more search....
Search for "Nosferatu" in Google Universal Search, the second result is a video. Actually, it's a Google Video of the entire movie, and you can watch it right in the search results.
Search for "Mexican poetry," and a Google Book Search result is in the results--an entire book of poetry by Octavio Paz.
"GM" alone probably means "General Motors." But "GM foods" refers to genetically modifed chow. "b&b ab" means "Bed and Breakfast in Alberta," but "ramstein ab" is an airbase. If you search for "types of dogs," "breeds of dogs" is probably what you meant, and Google will insert some results for that query.
In other words, Google will automatically try better versions of your queries when it can. Neat.
