Google makes amends with UK News Groups
Google has evidently reached agreements with several large UK news groups regarding the search engine company carrying their content on Google News. Details on these agreements have not been disclosed for fear that smaller news services will request the same licensing deal that the larger groups have made.
After months of going through European court battles regarding its news pages which display the headlines and first sentences from each news story, Google insisted that this only drove traffic to the various news websites.
Apparently, Google has accepted it has lost the argument over carrying stories without paying for them. It had long maintained that it was not in breach of copyright rules because it carries only the headline and the opening couple of sentences from each story in its service, pointing out that it was benefiting news groups by directing traffic to their websites. But, with organizations countering that consumers often just settled for news snippets and did not click through, Google lost a test case against the Belgian press in February.
It appears that reconciliation is precisely what Google is after, with these most recent agreement terms.Google and its subsidiary YouTube had stirred up quite a hornet’s nest with traditional media!!!
Google also faces fresh competition from Microsoft after that company's $6 billion deal to buy internet ad sales firm aQuantive last week. The three giants have been on a shopping spree as of late to make sure they have a firm foothold in the market.
