Samsung introduces cellphone chip with 4 GB memory

Samsung’s new moviMCP is a multi-chip package that satisfies the high-speed data transmission needs of mobile phones, while fully supporting the communication features within the handset.

Cell phones have been getting slimmer and sleeker by the day. Now there’s potential for them to get even trimmer in months to come. Samsung has announced the moviMCP, an entertainment chipset for mobile phones, that does away with the need for an external memory card or interface software.

The moviMCP (multi-chip package) includes 128MB of RAM and 256MB of flash memory for the main phone operations, plus 4GB of bonus flash memory for multimedia files. This could virtually eliminate the need for the expansion slots found on many cellphones, according to Samsung. Thus, it would also drastically reduce the size of some devices by consolidating the external memory chips into one small chipset.

No mention has been made of when companies can begin using the chips in their products, though it should occur before the end of the year.
