Yahoo! Photos Closing Up Shop
After Yahoo! bought Flickr, everyone has sorta been waiting for this news to come. Why have two image hosting sites under one roof? If you currently have pictures in a Yahoo Photos account, there's no rush to pull them out. But it would be better to do it now while you're still thinking about it. Here are your options:
1. Move your photos: You can move your photos to a Flickr, Kodak Gallery, Photobucket, Shutterfly, or Snapfish account (or create a new account and transfer them). Yahoo states that "... they will move the photos for you."
2. Download: Go to each photo and click the download button. Can you say "laborious"?
3. Buy an archive CD: If you switch to New Yahoo! Photos, you can get 700Mb of photos on a CD for $6.95 (from their partner Englaze). If you didn't switch you're out of luck.
Yahoo! is generally pretty cool to their users (sans #3 above), so they do point out you could use all three options. The proper order then would be #2, #3, then #1, since once you transfer your pictures your Yahoo! Photos account will be closed. Since I use Google Picasa (noticeably absent from the list in #1), I can only guess that the way to go about would be to:
- Go through your photos and as you see the "must have" pictures, download those to your computer.
- Order CDs for all your photos. Hey, it's an archive of your life so you'll want to have it all somewhere.
- Transfer to one of the other hosting sites.
