Sharp develops the tiniest tuner module
The micro mini tuner module from Sharp will enable television to be incorporated into many mobile devices.
We all know how VLSI or very large scale integration had brought about a revolution in electronics. One field which it transformed drastically was computers and that’s how we are able to have our palmtops and smartphones.
Televisions were a bit lagging in adopting the technology and maybe that’s why mobile TVs aren’t so commonplace. Now, with Sharp developing the smallest digital TV tuner in the world, portable TV will be all the more easier to incorporate into future devices. Small enough to be held on a thumb, Sharp’s VA3A5JZ912 tuner module is compatible with the Japanese 1-Seg terrestrial digital broadcast, measuring a diminutive 7.3mm x 6.3mm x 1.25mm.

The VA3A5JZ912 tuner module also uses only 85mW of power, which should increase the battery life when watching TV on a mobile phone. With production due in September 2007 and Sharp planning to make 1 million units per month we can soon expect mobile TVs to be as ubiquitous as FM radio on cellphones.
