PlayStation3 turns a bit cheaper

Sony spokesman David Karraker has confirmed that starting Monday, the 60GB model of the PS3 will drop to $499.

Recently we had reported that in view of the Electronic Entertainment Expo or E3, the biggest expectation among buyers is that Sony will slash the price of its PlayStation3, which right now has the last place among new gaming machines due to its $600 cost and thin line-up of games.

True to the buyers’ expectations, Sony spokesman David Karraker has confirmed that with immediate effect, the 60GB model of the PS3 will drop to $499. In the same vein, he talked about Sony’s plan to increase the system’s storage capacity from 60 to 80 GB and include a retail copy of the online racing title ‘MotorStorm’.

The larger capacity machine, which won’t be available in the United States and Canada until August, is in tune with the company’s strategy of eventually offering downloaded high-definition movies, video games, movie trailers and demos, Karraker added.

He said Sony will be releasing 100 new video games during the current fiscal year, including 15 titles that are exclusive to the PS3 such as the hack-and-slash action title ‘Heavenly Sword.’
