Price cut has PS3 posting impressive sales

A $100 price cut in the US has triggered the increased sales of PlayStation 3.

Just a week ago, PlayStation3 consoles were slow in moving off store shelves. Suddenly sales have picked up, so much that on Amazon.com the 60GB PS3 is ranked No. 1 in video game sales. Quite a feat considering it was in 26th position and the  increase in interest is 2500 percent.

What did the trick was the new pricing at US$499.99 , which is $100 cheaper than last week. All those who coveted the PlayStation brand are now rushing to purchase it.

Whether all this translates into money is unlikely as hardware-wise Sony was losing money on the PS3; now they are losing even more. They're not going to make money back in games sales (at least in the near future) because there are only a small number of compelling titles available for the PS3, compared to Nintendo Wii and Microsoft Xbox 360.

Maybe, Sony can expect to get the money flowing from Blu-ray movie sales, as the PS3 has become a cheap alternative for those wanting to get into the High Definition movie disc world.
