Sony planning to phase out cheaper PS3. Well, they are evil after all.

Now that it is affordable, Sony will phase out its 60 GB PS3 in the United States leaving the original $600 entry fee for its (few remaining) fans.

It seemed Sony had pulled a major public relations coup when it announced a price cut of $100 on its 60-gigabyte Playstation3. The company that could do-no-right had finally seen the writing on the wall: Parents were buying the cheaper, funner Wii. Hardcore gamers were spending money on desktops or sticking with the Xbox 360.

Analysts praised Sony for its move.

But a zebra can't change its stripes any more than a bloated entertainment media conglomerate can change their
1990s mindset.

Sony will sell the $499 version until "supplies of that unit are depleted". With around 3 million units in inventory, Sony estimated they'll last months after the August debut of the new, pricier 80 GB model, which comes with a copy of its off-road racing game MotorStorm. As an added bonus, the 80 GB model also includes less backwards compatibility with older PS2 games.
