Intel to take the next leap with Penryn

Intel's upcoming 45nm 'Penryn' architecture is an upgrade to today's Core 2 technology.

A sneak peak into the Intel’s 45nm Penryn processor architecture, road map of which was seen by DailyTech, reveals that the leading chip-maker is planning four new Core 2 Duo chips and one new Core 2 Extreme, likely to hit the market in the first quarter of 2008. They all operate on an 800MHz frontside bus and are capable of delivering 2.1GHz, 2.4GHz, 2.5GHz and 2.6GHz clock speeds. The four chips' model numbers are not yet known, but the top two parts incorporate 6MB of L2 cache, while the others have just 3MB.

Intel will also pitch Penryn at small form-factor PCs through a line of low-voltage (LV) and ultra-low voltage (ULV) versions.
