Toshiba's USB flash drives for Vista-based PCs
Toshiba has expanded its TransMemory family of USB flash memory devices including Windows ReadyBoost for use with Microsoft Windows Vista operating system.
| After sounding the death knell to zip drives and taking over the portable memory market, USB flash drives caught the fancy of every manufacturer. And so dozens of brands of USB flash drives are cluttering the market with little to differentiate from each other. But leading brand Toshiba is planning a new line of its TransMemory USB flash drives, with the Windows ReadyBoost, to set it apart from others. |

The Windows ReadyBoost functionality enables users to boost system responsiveness of PCs running Vista. The Windows Vista operating system allows USB flash drives enhanced for Windows ReadyBoost to provide additional system memory, thus making PCs more responsive. Toshiba’s line, called U2K, will comprise 1GB-8GB models and is due out in October. They're also planning a 32GB version by the year-end, though in a limited edition.

Vista uses the flash drive to store the pagefile (what your computer uses when it runs out of RAM). Most high speed flash drives are compatible with ReadyBoost; in fact, I have a three-year-old 256MB flash drive that works just fine. Releasing flash drives with ReadyBoost functionality is nothing new.
In addition, these devices don't affect system performance all that much anyway. I tried using one on mine, and I noticed no significant increase in speed. I recommend you spend your hard-earned money on memory, not one of these.
