    When does the error message come up? is it a Hard drive (HDD) we are talking about or a DVD-ROM? what brand? what software are you running that gives you the error message?

    This sounds like DVD-ROM issue not a HDD issue.

    usually happens when you try to copy a DVD that has a different regional settings than the DVD-ROM being used.

    If that is the case launch the DVD software that came with the DVD-ROM, something like PowerDVD. It will then tell you that the movie you're trying to watch is in a different regional setting or code, it should allow you to change the setting to match the DVD depending on your DVD-ROM.

    if you can't change the reginal code or setting on your DVD-ROM maybe you need to purchase a Region-Free DVD-ROM. as this is a Hardware issue not software.
