Administrator accounts are confusing on my computer. I am the only user, and have designated my account as having administrator priviliges, but I recently tried making changes to services (start - run - msconfig) but was denied access to making some changes. I am trying to set up a Maxtor BlackArmor external hard drive, but have been unsuccessful due to Administrator accounts; Maxtor support says I have to have full Administrative priviliges to set the drive to work. Accounts, as listed in Documents and Settings, are: -Administrator (displays on welcome screen only in safe mode) -Owner: my personal account (the only one that displays in normal mode) -Administrator.YOUR-0D330DFBAF (maybe this is the true Admin account) -Default user, All users, Local service, Network service. -also there is a Guest account, currently off. Is there a way to consolidate these accounts, ideally so there is only one active account, mine, with full administrative priviliges? Not really.
Have you tried creating a new (temporary) administrator account to perform the actions you require?
- In control panel, create a new admin user called Fixit.
(NOTE: You might have to go into safe mode as Administrator to manipulate users if your Owner account is stuffed.) - From the welcome screen, choose Fixit and try to get your Maxtor running.
- Be very careful to give access to "all users" at every opportunity.
- Once you have things running properly under Fixit, log out
- Log in as Owner and check whether things are running OK.
- Optionally delete the Fixit account in a day or two when you are sure things are all good.
Right-Click My Computer --> select Manage
Click on Local Users and Groups --> Groups --> Administrators
What are the names there? If your "Owner" account isn't there then you are not an administrator.
You need to be on an adminitsrator account in order to grant adminisator rights to your "Owner"account.
On the login screen, Hit control+alt+delete and type administrator and the password you selected when you first setup this computer.
If you don't get a login screen when you boot up, then you need to disable "Use faster user switch" and "Use welcome screen."
Goto control panel --> user accounts --> change the ways user log on and off -->
Uncheck both options and apply.
Now log in as administrator and password.
If you forgot or don't know your password then that is a whole another walk through.
If you don't remember your password, try leaving it blank.

In Safe mode, the welcome screen shows two accounts, Administrator, and owner,
both marked as Administrator accounts. This must mean that my account is an administrator.
Even though I could not do what I had to as I explained above. Perhaps changing a required service
such as vsmon.exe in Zone Alarm, is not possible in any account. - As I wrote before, in Computer Management (Local), there is no item named
"Local Users and Groups" in System Tools, Storage, or Services and Applications,
the three highest trees.
Also, as I wrote before, in Safe mode the two accounts that display on the welcome
screen are both marked administrator. Should such accounts always be able to close
any application, even one operating at BIOS levels like vsmon.exe?

After your logged in as an administrator
Go to back to user accounts --> select the "Owner" account and change account type --> administrator.
