How can I connect my Canon digital camcorder to a computer using a DV (IEEE 1394) cable?

This article describes how to connect your Canon camcorder to a computer using a DV cable.

You can transfer taped footage to a computer by connecting it to the camcorder using a DV cable. Use either commercially available DV capture-compliant video-editing software or a similar software supplied with your computer to transfer video recordings to the computer. Please refer to the instruction manual supplied with the software for information on how to use it.

Please check the following things when making the connection.

- The computer must be either equipped with an IEEE 1394 (DV) terminal or enhanced with an IEEE 1394 capture board to connect with the camcorder. Please refer to the instruction manual supplied with your computer or the capture board for information on the location of the terminals.
- A DV cable is not supplied with your camcorder. Use a commercially available DV cable.
- The computer's IEEE 1394 (DV) terminal will be either a 4-pin or a 6-pin type, depending on the computer used. Ensure that you use a cable matching your computer's terminal type. (The camcorder's terminal is 4-pin type)
- An appropriate driver is included with Windows operating systems starting with Windows 98 Second Edition and Mac operating systems starting with OS 9. The driver is installed automatically when you connect the camcorder to the computer.
- Powering the camcorder from a household power source it is connected to the computer is advisable.

Making the connection

1. Turn the camcorder's POWER switch to <PLAY>.

2. Set the TAPE/CARD switch to <TAPE>.

3. Connect the camcorder's DV terminal to the computer's IEEE 1394 terminal with a DV cable as shown in the figure below.
The placement of DV terminals varies for different computers. The instruction manual supplied with your computer gives you more details.

4. Start the software. Refer to the software instruction manual given with your camcorder for details.

Precautions:
1. The transfer operation may not work correctly depending on the software and specifications/settings of your computer.

2. If the computer freezes while the camcorder is connected, disconnect and then reconnect the DV cable. If the problem persists, try the following.
(1) Disconnect the DV cable, and then turn off the camcorder and the computer.
(2) Turn the camcorder and the computer back on and reconnect them using the DV cable.

3. Do not connect other devices to the camcorder's USB terminal or do not connect other IEEE 1394 devices to the computer while the camcorder is connected to the computer.
