Troubleshooting images that appear in horizontal lines or mosaic during replay on Canon camcorder.

This article tells you about cleaning the video heads.

If video heads are dirty, the camcorder does not record pictures correctly, and images being played back may be distorted.

The video heads may be dirty if the camcorder shows the following symptoms.

The picture looks like a mosaic (See Figure 1) or has stripes (See Figure 2) during playback.

The picture and sound freeze for a moment (for about 0.5 seconds), or a blue screen appears.

The message "HEADS DIRTY, USE CLEANING CASSETTE" appear on the side panel.

In cases like these, please try the following things.
- Clean the video heads using commercially available dry cleaning cassette.
- Replace the video cassette with the new one.

If the problem continues, please contact the nearest Canon service facility.

Video heads become dirty when:
- Using the camcorder under humid or high-temperature conditions.
- Using a damaged or dirty cassette.
- Using the camcorder in a dusty area.
- Using the camcorder without cleaning the video heads for a long period of time.

Please note the following things to avoid having distorted pictures.

Prior to recording important scenes, be sure to clean the video heads and make a test recording. Also, clean video heads before storing the camcorder after use.
