Why would I change the WEP Encryption Level when setting up Comcast Internet Service?
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) is a form of encryption code that is identical among all the computers or laptops on your wireless network in order to protect your Home Network and minimize hacker intrusion. Wireless networks unprotected by WEP are extremely vulnerable to intruders trying to access available networks and ?free? Internet access.
Comcast requires WEP Encryption Strength to be enabled by the Installation Technician during the initial setup of the Comcast Gateway. Comcast recommends a security level of 128-bit (high security) WEP protection and is the default WEP encryption strength at the time of the profession installation. However, the Customer Interface provides the customer the ability to change the level of WEP protection. You may choose to change the strength to 64-bit (basic security) if the signal strength and link quality are poor, or disable WEP completely by choosing none. WEP encryption is not necessary for Gateway operation, but is recommended for enhanced network security. The Comcast Home Networking Customer Interface provides the option (s) to the customer in the Wireless Setup section of the Gateway Interface.
