The term IP refers to Internet Protocol. Every computer connected to the Internet must have an IP address so that it can receive files and e-mail messages.  Ordinarily, IP addresses are dynamic, that is, they change every time you are on the computer.

Static IP is an Internet Protocol address that remains the same every time you log onto the Internet. It potentially enables you to host a Web site at your home or business, or to access a computer remotely over the Internet. Corporate networks with their own servers requires static IP addresses.

Static IP is available to residential customers for an additional monthly rate, but is free with BellSouth (R) FastAccess (R) Xtreme service.
