How to turn Sounds Off on AOL or AIM E-mail?

AOL or AIM Mail makes a clicking sound to provide audible feedback whenever you navigate around. If you'd rather have the sounds turned off, this can be done at the browser level.

Taking the following steps will get rid of all browser navigation click sounds in the Microsoft® Windows® operating system, not just in AOL or AIM Mail.

Note: If you are using a different operating system or Web browser, please consult its documentation for steps on how to disable its sounds.

To turn off sounds for Microsoft Internet Explorer:
1. Open the Sounds Control Panel:

  • If using Windows® XP, click the Start button, then click Control Panel. Click the Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices icon if you are looking at a Category View of the Control Panel. If you are looking at a Classic View, click the Sounds and Audio Devices icon, then click the Sounds tab.
  • If using Windows® 98, Windows® ME, or Windows® 2000, click the Start button, select Settings, then click Control Panel. Double-click the Sounds and Multimedia icon.

2. In the Program events: box, scroll down to Windows Explorer, then click Start Navigation to highlight it.
3. Click the Sounds: drop-down menu to open it, choose [None] from the list, then click it.

Note: To turn the sounds back on, click the Sounds: drop-down menu to open it, choose a sound from the list, then click it.

4. Click the OK button.
