How to Isolate the Signal on my DSL Line

  1. Disconnect all telephony devices in the house except the aDSL modem and the filtered phone the customer is talking on.

    Telephony devices that need to be disconnected include but are not limited to:

    • Fax machine
    • DVR/Tivo boxes
    • Cable Boxes/Satellite boxes
    • Telephones
    • Caller ID boxes
    • Dial-up computers
    • Alarm system (if possible).
    • Any other device that plugs into the telephone line


  2. Power cycle the aDSL modem.


  3. Wait up to 2 minutes for the aDSL modem to sync up. While the modem is syncing up check for interfering devices in the house.


    The following appliances can interfere with DSL signals:

    • Halogen lamps
    • Fluorescent lights
    • Scanners
    • Cell Phones
    • Ham radios
    • AM radios
    • Modem, fax, or other device on the line
    • Microwave oven
    • Bad Phone cord
    • The computer itself if the modem is on top of or beside it (within 3 feet)


  4. If the modem is in sync, try to connect. If you are still not able to obtain sync on your aDSL modem please contact EarthLink Technical Support.
