How to Hardcode an IP Address to Ping the Network Card and DSL Modem?

Follow the instructions below to hardcode an IP address in order to ping a network Interface Card and Modem.

  1. From the Start menu, click Settings, and choose Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Network icon.

  3. Select TCP/IP in the Network component list.
  4. Click the Properties button.

  5. Click on the IP Address tab.
  6. Select Specify an IP address.
  7. In the IP Address field, type the NIC IP for your DSL modem.
  8. In the Subnet Mask field, type the Subnet Mask for your DSL modem.
  9. Click on the DNS Configuration tab.

  10. In the Host field, type host.
  11. In the Domain field, type earthlink.net.
  12. In the DNS Server Search Order field, type 207.217.120.83.
  13. Click the Add button.
  14. In the DNS Server Search Order field, type 207.217.77.82.
  15. Click the Add button.
  16. Click on the Gateway tab.

  17. In the New gateway field, type 172.16.0.254.
  18. Click the Add button.
  19. Click the OK button.

  21. Click the OK button to restart your computer.

  23. In the Open field, type command.
  24. Click the OK button.

  25. Type ping followed by a space followed by the IP address you want to ping (either the IP for the Modem or the NIC) and press the Enter key.

    How do I undo it? My son sent me a laptop with Vista on it and the IP is hardcoded to his base server. I cannot undo it to allow windows to get a new IP address. Help
