How to Hardcode an IP Address to Ping the Network Card and DSL Modem?
Follow the instructions below to hardcode an IP address in order to ping a network Interface Card and Modem.
- From the Start menu, click Settings, and choose Control Panel.
- Double-click the Network icon.
- Select TCP/IP in the Network component list.
- Click the Properties button.
- Click on the IP Address tab.
- Select Specify an IP address.
- In the IP Address field, type the NIC IP for your DSL modem.
- In the Subnet Mask field, type the Subnet Mask for your DSL modem.
- Click on the DNS Configuration tab.
- In the Host field, type host.
- In the Domain field, type earthlink.net.
- In the DNS Server Search Order field, type 207.217.120.83.
- Click the Add button.
- In the DNS Server Search Order field, type 207.217.77.82.
- Click the Add button.
- Click on the Gateway tab.
- In the New gateway field, type 172.16.0.254.
- Click the Add button.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the OK button.
- Click the OK button to restart your computer.
- From the Start menu, choose Run.
- In the Open field, type command.
- Click the OK button.
- Type ping followed by a space followed by the IP address you want to ping (either the IP for the Modem or the NIC) and press the Enter key.

- From the Start menu, click Settings, and choose Network and Dial-up Connection.
- Click the Local Area Connection icon with your right mouse button, then choose Properties.
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the list.
- Click the Properties button.
- Select Use the following IP address.
- In the IP Address field, type the NIC IP for your DSL modem.
- In the Subnet mask field, type the Subnet Mask for your DSL modem.
- In the Default gateway field, type the Modem IP for your DSL modem.
- In the Preferred DNS server field, type 207.217.120.83.
- In the Alternate DNS server field, type 207.217.77.82.
- Click the OK button.
- From the Start menu, choose Run.
- In the Open field, type command.
- Click the OK button.
- At the C: prompt, type ping followed by a space followed by the IP address you want to ping (either the IP for the Modem or the NIC) and press the Enter key.

- Double-click the Hard Disk icon.
- Double-click the Applications icon.
- Double-click the Utilities icon.
- Double-click the Network Utility icon.
- Click on the Ping tab.
- In the Please enter the network address to ping field, type the IP address you wish to ping.
- Click the Ping button.
