Solutions

Verify the Phone Jack Has a Dial Tone

If the wall jack has no dial tone, the computer's modem will not be able to dial out.

To verify a dial tone:
1. Unplug the phone line that the computer uses from the wall jack and plug a regular phone into the same jack.
2. If there is a dial tone, try to sign in again. If no dial tone is present, call your local phone company.

Check the Physical Connections

Check to see if the phone cord has come unplugged from the back of the computer or the wall jack.

To check the physical connections:
1. Verify that no splitters are plugged into the wall.
2. Ensure the phone line goes directly from the wall jack to the computer.
3. Check that the phone cord is plugged into the jack on the back of the computer that is marked Line or has the symbol of a phone jack. (If it is plugged into the jack marked with the word Phone or the symbol of a phone, switch the jack.)
