Is there a way to use AOL as a dialup ISP service only without installing all the AOL software (and use IE)?

No Summary

Question
Hi Ron, I have a limited PC and a dial up only country line that only allows me to connect at 28K.  Is there a way to use AOL as a dialup ISP service only without installing all the AOL software (and use IE)?  If not, is there an older version of AOL software that will minimize overhead and work with W2000 and IE?.  Thanks, Dave Alexander

Answer
Hello there!

What I have learned about the service of AOL is that, you have to install the cd to get the connection. There is no way for us to get the Internet signal w/o installing it first because you need the screen name and the password for you to be able to connect to AOL access numbers. AOL software 9.0 Security Edition works with Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

Thanks!

Please read this too:

Like many other Internet Service Providers (ISPs), AOL installs software that makes it possible to dial into our network when you want to go online using AOL. The Windows operating system allows for a single default dialer. If you have more than one ISP, only one of the dialers can be the Windows default. However, you can run any dialer, whether it's the default or not, by double-clicking the appropriate icon.

To change your default dialer

1.  Close AOL and all Internet applications that you have open.
2.  On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, then click Control Panel.
3. Double-click the Internet Options (or Internet) icon.
4.  In the Internet Properties window click the Connections tab
5.  In the Dial-up settings section, choose the dialer software you would like to use by clicking its name.
6.  Select either Dial whenever a network connection is not present or Always dial my default connection.
7.  Click Set Default.
8.  Click OK. Windows will reset the dialer as requested.
