My iTunes is not recognizing my iPod.
For Windows users. After connecting an iPod, it doesn't show up in iTunes (but is seen in My Computer).

Fix #1
You may have tried this already, but if not, in situations like this it is probably best to reinstall the software (iTunes in this case). The iTunes/iPod package has a bunch of different parts and anyone of them may have gotten corrupted or messed up. Having a fresh install could alleviate any problems.
Note: Your songs (both from CDs and the iTunes Store) won't be deleted during this process. If you want to back them up anyway, open My Computer and go to: My Documents\My Music, then copy and paste the iTunes folder to your desktop.
- Close all windows.
- Open Control Panel (through the Start button or Start > Settings).
- Open Add or Remove Programs.
- Select iTunes, then click Remove.
- Select Yes.
- Do not restart when prompted.
- Go back into Add or Remove Programs, remove any iPod Updater applications that are listed, just like you did for iTunes.
- Now restart your computer.
Breath in. Hold. Breath out. Breath in. Hold. Breath out.
Very good. Now, back to work.
- Open My Computer, double click Local Disk C, double click Program Files.
- Do you see the iTunes folder? It may or may not be there. If so, right-click over the iTunes folder, select Delete, select Yes.
- Do the same for the iPod folder (right click, delete, yes).
- Minimize all windows and right-click over the Recycle Bin. Select Empty Recycle Bin.
- Restart your computer.
Fix #2
Your computer manages different programs in different ways. Your problem may stem from the fact that the iPod Service isn't set properly.
- Disconnect your iPod and quit iTunes.
- From the desktop, right click over My Computer and click Manage.
- In the left side panel, double click Services and Applications, then double click Services (right underneath).
- Double click iPod Service in the right hand panel.
- Click the Stop button under the General tab and leave the iPod Service Properties window open.
- Connect your iPod and wait until you see it in My Computer (be patient, it may take awhile).
- Click the Start button in the iPod Service Properties window.
- Open iTunes.

Again same thing.nothing. but if u bring dwn the help menu, click repair ipod. click yes, even tho it says my ipod is working fine. after 10mins of sorting out my tunes they all finally popped up in the library. finally i can add to my collection without wiping the whole thing out and re formatting. i hope this helps as i no how fustrating it can be (-;

- Posted by: PlsAnswerMyQuestion at 07 Jan 02:34 permalinkIs installing this "iTunes" safe? Coz' while it is installing iTunes & QuickTime, a small window appeared.. it says, USER ACCOUNT CONTROL: iTunes (or I think its Apple) asks your permission to continue. I'm scared to press the continue button-thinking that my computer can get harmed. Please answer my question..

- Posted by: rogerst_1232 at 05 Mar 17:26 permalinkOkay, I had a similar problem with a 5th Gen 30GB, and I stumbled upon a solution that I have not seen anywhere else.
Basically, my iPod was mounting as a disk drive, but would not show up in iTunes. I reset it many times and ran the diagnostics (left and center upon Apple logo at startup). Nothing worked, and of course I couldn't restore it, because it wouldn't show up in iTunes. It did the same thing regardless of what PC or Mac it was plugged into -- it always mounted, but never showed up in iTunes.
Another odd observation was that it was mounting on my Mac desktop with the "external hard drive" icon, not with an iPod icon.
Here is what I did that fixed it:
1. Plugged it in to a Mac.
2. Opened a Terminal session
3. Browsed to the /Volumes/iPod/iPod_Control/ folder
4. Renamed the iTunes sub-folder to iTunes.backup
5. Ejected the iPod, then re-connected it
At this point, iTunes detected my iPod just fine! I went through the restore procedure as a precaution; because I have no idea what this directory really contains.
I realize that the circumstances surrounding my successful restore are somewhat unique, and probably don't apply to very many other situations, which is why I described some of the quirky things (like the icon showing up as an external hard drive) in detail at the beginning of this. Don't attempt it if you're not comfortable with what I described, or if your iPod has different symptoms! - Posted by: cupcakeslover91 at 12 Jun 05:55 permalink

1. Click "Start"
2. Right click "My Computer"
3. Click "Manage"
4. Click "Device Manager"
5. Expand "USB Controllers" (click on the + sign in front to expand)
6. Plug in iPod to USB port
7. Right click on the iPod USB connection (mine had a yellow circle with a white "!" inside)
8. Click "Uninstall"
9. Click "OK"
The iPod I have booted right away. You may have to disconnect the iPod and then plug it back in to the USB port for the PC to recognize it.
Good luck! Hope this helps.
