iPod displays Do not disconnect message

An explanation of what to do when the iPod displays this message.

The iPod connects to your computer by way of a USB port.  All devices that connect using USB must be "unmounted" before you unplug them.  The "Do Not Disconnect" message lets you know that you still have to unmount the iPod.

Data gets transferred between the computer and the iPod.  There is no way for you to know when data is being transfer or if nothing is happening.  The only way to know is to properly terminate the connection.

  • The tech term for this is "unmount" the device.
  • In iTunes, the term is "eject" (the "up" button in the Source list.)

  • In Windows, the term is "stop" when you go to "Safely remove hardware".
They all do the same thing, which is to properly close the connection between the device and the computer.

After you click eject in iTunes, it will take the iPod anywhere from 10 to 60 seconds to close the connection and stop displaying "Do Not Disconnect". If you have an 80 gig iPod, it can take even longer, so be patient. If you think there's a problem and "Do no disconnect" will not go away, see this guide to unfreezing an iPod.

►DIRE WARNING: It is worth repeating:  Do not unplug the iPod while the "Do not disconnect" screen is displayed.  You will interrupt the transfer of data and leave the iPod with incomplete set of data. It's very likely that an iPod with incomplete data will not work at all.  This warning actually applies to any USB device.

I use my iPod as a Harddrive. On any vista-PC (often without iTunes) I can unmount the USB-device, but the iPod still shows the "Do Not DIsconnect"-message AND the local iPod-HD is spinning.
On any XP-PC it works "normal". Any solutions for this Vista-Problem?

I have a 2nd gen nano. It is stuck on two things depending on whether it is plugged in to iTunes or not. If it is not plugged in the display reads "Use iTunes to restore" in about 5 languages. So I plug in the USB, iTunes opens and i try to sync or format or restore and it is stuck on "Do Not Disconnect" even after resetting with the MENU and center buttons. Any ideas?
