How to configure broadband Internet connections in Windows XP?

This article shows you how to configure DSL, ADSL using PPPoE protocol on your computer.

Before setting up an Internet connection, you have to make sure that your ADSL modem is properly installed and connected, either via an Ethernet network card or USB, to your computer.

  1. To set up a new connection, select Start menu.

  2. Go to Settings> Network Connections.

    • You can also select in the Control Panel Network Connections.

    • If you have a Network card installed, it will be shown on the right side as a 'Local Area Connection'.

  3. Select  from the Network Tasks to Create a new connection.

    Note :
To be able to create a new connection, you must have proper user permissions.

  4. The New Connection Wizard will show up on the screen.

  5. Click Next.

  6. The next window is about Network Connection Wizard.

  7. Select 'Connect to the Internet'.

  8. Click Next.

  9. You will reach the Getting ready window.

  10. If you select 'Choose from a list of Internet providers (ISPs)',  the system will dial out, and probably connect to Microsoft to download the local, up-to-date list.

It is preferable, however, to opt for 'Set up my connection manually'.

  11. Click Next.

  12. In Internet connection, check the second radio button if you are using a broadband connection via an ADSL modem, using PPPoE as connection method. (This is different to a modem connection)

  13. Click Next.

  14. Connection name: Define the name of your ISP in this window. e.g:SKYNET.

  15. Click Next.

  16. Internet Account Information: Enter your Username and Password, as assigned to you by your Internet Service Provider.

  17. Click Next.

Here you can select to have on your desktop an icon for this connection.

  18. Click Finish.

  19. You will see that the windows for the Network connections shows the new connection.

  20. Now you are all set for endless hours of browsing on the Internet!
