Force it to Disk Mode and then Update.

This Disk Mode thingy makes the iPod look like an ordinary hard drive (perish the thought!) to your computer. If it shows up in My Computer this way, we can reload the iPod software.  Roll `em:
Forcing iPod onto Disk Mode:
  • Ensure your iPod has a charge: plug your iPod into your computer or wall charger for a while (20 minutes should do).
  • Disconnect the iPod from the computer.
    1. Turn the Hold switch on, then back to off.
    2. Press and hold the Menu and Select buttons until the Apple logo appears
    3. Immediately switch your figures to press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons until "Disk Mode" appears at the top.

Check the iPod Updater:
  1. Go to Start > All Programs > iPod > iPod Updater (folder) > iPod Updater (most recent date).
  2. The iPod Updater will prompt  you to connect the iPod.
  3. Do this and wait, it may take a while to recognize your iPod.
You may get the option to Update and Restore (or just Restore).
  • If Update is an option, definitely do that now. The updated iPod software may cure your problems.
  • A "Restore" will erase everything on your iPod. Since you've had some problems you might want to do this, but you'll lose those Britney Spears bootlegs you like jamming to.

Did the above steps resolve your problem?
