The New User's Guide to iPod

New to iPod? Here's what you need to know.

There are a couple of key things you should be aware of in order to fully enjoy an iPod.

Just got an iPod? Sweet! While it may be totally over-hyped in the media, the iPod is still a very convenient, user-friendly way to take your music with you.

Below you'll see links for the different sections of this guide. They layout how to setup and best use the iPod. Make sure you read them completely. Before we get started, let's clear up some common misconceptions held by new-to-iPod owners:

  • You need iTunes to put songs on your iPod (download it from here).
    • Before, Apple supplied an iTunes installation disc with every iPod. Apparently Stevie Jobs has been saying "bah humbug" quite a bit recently.
    • If you don't have a broadband connection to the internet, it'll take a long time to download.
  • You cannot transfer music from the iPod to your computer.
    • Well, actually you can, but like Run D.M.C. rockin' a rhyme, "it's tricky."
    • To start out, just use the iPod the way it's designed, then after six months you can decide if you want to do more advanced stuff.
  • You don't have to purchase songs from the iTunes Store.
    • We'll cover this more in the CD import section.
    • iTunes is on your computer. The iTunes Store is a website (accessible only through iTunes).
    • iTunes is a software that manages your music and your iPod.
    • The iTunes Store is just a buy-n-download website that is embedded into iTunes.
