Download iTunes

iTunes is the iPod management software and you need it to... um, well, manage your iPod.

Yup, you can do anything on an iPod without the iPod management software, iTunes.  Download it from here and install it.

If you have a high speed internet connection, skip to the next step.

On a dial-up, this download will take a nasty long time and we know not everyone has a high speed internet connection.  If you are one of the unfortunate people who live in an area where:
  1. the telephone company is too cheap to set up DSL in your neighborhood, or
  2. the cable company likes to extort from you by bundling cable TV with their internet access, or
  3. parents think "the dial-up modem works fine"
We have some suggestions...

Another computer
  • Take a blank CD to a computer that does have a high speed internet connection.
  • After iTunes is  downloaded to that computer, copy the file to the CD.
    • You don't have to go through the installation on that computer, just copy the file that is downloaded.
  • Load iTunes onto your computer from the CD.
Here's a list of sources of "another computer"
      • Work
      • School (ask permission, they'll give it you)
      • Library
      • A friend's house
Old iTunes Installation Disk

You may have a friend/relative/co-worker who has had an iPod for a while (before the Fall of 2006).  They may still have their installation CD.  Borrow it and load the old version of iTunes onto your computer.  When the installation is done, go to Help and click Check for Updates.  This may still take a while, but not as long as the full download.

Okay, iTunes is loaded, on to the next step:
