Load songs into iTunes

Your songs need to be in iTunes in order to get them on your iPod. There are several ways to do this.

Songs already on your computer

Simply drag the file (song, movie, picture) to the Library icon in the iTunes Source list. Or you can point iTunes to the files this way:
  1. Open iTunes
  2. Click on File.  There are a couple of options:
    • Add File to Library - this is for adding one song at a time.
    • Add Folder to Library - use this to make your existing music folder the iTunes Music folder.
    • Import - this will copy your songs into the iTunes Music folder (meaning you'll have 2 copies of those songs).
Songs not on your computer

The #1 way to build your library is through CD importing.  It's totally legal and free (except that "time is money" thing).

If you are doing a lot of CDs at once, set iTunes to automatically:
  • Go to Edit and select Preferences.
  • Select the Advanced tab, and then the Importing tab under that.
    • For On CD Insert:, select Import CD and Eject.
    • Check the box next to "Automatically retrieve CD track names from the Internet."
With iTunes loaded, we can now connect the iPod to the computer and load it up.
