I want to create a backup of email messages in Outlook Express.

Just follow the steps given in this article and learn how to store your email messages in a folder of your choice, using Outlook Express.

Email helps us to correspond with others across the world easily and quickly. Compared to other forms of correspondence, its cost is virtually negligible and hence has become very popular.

From being regarded as a casual form of communication, email is now accepted as a tool in formal communication. As more and more businesses go online, the use of email to interact with clients and other businesses has made it imperative to have a record of  the  emails and so the need for email management and back up!

The need for working with emails using a friendlier interface has brought in Email Clients - programs that send, receive, catalog, store and search emails messages.Outlook Express is one such program.

Here's how you can create a back-up of email messages stored in Outlook Express.

  • Open Outlook Express.

  • Click on Tools > Options.

  • The Options window, as shown below, will pop up.

  • Click on Maintenance tab in the Options window.

  • Maintenance options will be brought to the foreground.

  • Click on Store Folder.

  • The Store Location window will pop up. It displays the directory on your system in which Outlook Express stores the email messages.

  • Highlight the directory path, right-click and then select Copy option.

  • You have now copied the directory path onto the clipboard.

  • Click on Start.
  • Click on Run.

  • The Run pop-up window will be displayed.

  • Paste the directory path in the Open text field.

  • Click  OK.

  • You will be immediately taken to the folder in which Outlook Express stores your email messages.
The program stores the messages in file with the extension .dbx and there is one .dbx file corresponding to each folder that you have in Outlook Express.

  • Here's where your messages are stored. You can copy and paste the files to another system or burn it on a CD.

Note: You can also specify the Store Folder in Outlook Express. This way  you will know for certain where messages are stored. You can take backups from that directory instead of going through all the steps above.
To set the Store Folder, select the Change button and change the folder.
