Syncing (and not syncing) your iPod and iTunes
Some options on how to manage your songs
By default, when you connect your iPod to your computer, iTunes will sync the iPod’s contents to the exact contents of iTunes library. Let’s call this auto-sync. If you delete a song from iTunes, the next time you connect the iPod the auto-sync will delete it from the iPod.
That’s all well and good. But after a couple of months of use, pretty much anyone is going to want to do something more with their iPod or their computer. That means you’ll need to turn off auto-syncing. If you have a 2 gig nano, but a large song library, what iTunes does during auto-sync can be confusing (it seems to add the new songs and randomly delete songs to make room). If you have an 80 gig iPod Video and a computer with a 60 gig harddrive, you’ll obviously be keeping things on the iPod that are not on your computer. Auto-syncing is totally pointless at this point and you need to switch to manual sync.
Turn off auto-syncing:
- Connect the iPod and select it in the Source list (once it comes up)
- Under the Summary tab, check “Manually manage music and videos”
After doing this, you will have to copy new music to the iPod by dragging and dropping onto the iPod in the Source list. Also, if you delete something from iTunes, it will stay on the iPod.
If you want to remove something from the iPod, you can do it through iTunes by selecting the iPod in the Source list and select the corresponding tab. Locate the file and delete it.
Now for some people, doing all this dragging and dropping is sort of pointless considering the whole point of technology is to make life easier. To these people I say, “You’re absolutely right.” What you need to do is explore some of the other options for having what you want on your iPod and iTunes. “So whatcha whatcha whatcha want?”
The other option is to auto-sync playlists only. This is kinda weird way to do it, but you can set up one or several playlist in iTunes have the iPod only auto-sync on only those. So you could set up one playlist (i.e. "For iPod") and put the songs for your iPod in there. Then in iTunes select “Automatically update selected playlists only” and check the desired playlist. If you want to remove a song from the iPod, just remove it from the playlist. In this scenario you can leave the iTunes whichever way you want and manage the iPod through the playlist.
