I cannot connect to Xbox 360 Live. The console fails the IP Confirmed test.

A step-by-step guide to troubleshoot the connection to Xbox 360 Live.

If you are not able to get connected to the internet, then it might be due to two possible reasons.
  • Your console is unable to obtain the IP address from your ISP or DHCP.
  • The IP settings shown on the dashboard are incorrect.

Now to fix this problem, select the type of connection you have:

  1. I have a direct connection through modem.
  2. I have a shared connection through a modem and a router.
  3. I have a Microsoft Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

1. Steps for direct connection through modem:

  1. Set your IP address in Network Settings to Automatic so that your IP address settings are obtained from your ISP automatically.
  2. If you use a static IP address you got from your ISP,  then you must manually key in this address in the Dashboard.
  3. Turn off your modem, wait for a couple of minutes and turn it back on.
  4. Wait for 5 minutes and then try reconnecting
  5. If your ISP requires PPPoE settings, ensure you have entered it correctly.  (call your ISP and double check on this)
  6. If your ISP does not use PPPoE, leave these fields blank in the Dashboard.

2. Steps for shared connection through a modem and a router:

  1. Turn off your modem first and turn off your router
  2. Turn on your modem and wait for a couple of minutes and then turn on your router.
  3. Wait for a couple of minutes and try reconnecting.  If no luck, then:
  4. Try connecting the Xbox 360 console directly to the modem, then try Xbox Live. This eliminates any configuration problems on the router.

(Note: If it works then it is some kind of configuration issue with your router.  see the router's documentation or contact the technical support group for configuring your router)
  5. Check the IP address that you entered in the Network Settings area of the Xbox Dashboard.
  6. Set your IP settings to Automatic.
  7. If your ISP requires PPPoE settings, connect directly to your modem and ensure you have entered it correctly.  (call your ISP and double check on this).

(Note: If you can connect using a modem directly then check your router documentation to configure the PPPoE settings correctly on the router)
  8. If you get an IP conflict error in the (More Info section) then do the following:
    1. Turn off modem and router.
    2. Try to connect your console directly to the modem. (If it works, then there is a issue with the configuration on the router's DHCP server.  Check the router's documentation or contact your ISP technical support)

3. Steps for Microsoft Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS):

  1. Check whether you are able to connect to the Internet.  If not, you need to configure your Internet Connection Sharing.
  2. Turn off your modem, wait for a couple of minutes and then turn it back on.
  3. If your a using one modem to switch between your Xbox console and computer then do the following:
    1. On the computer, click Start -> Run.
    2. Type ncpa.cpl, click OK.
    3. On the tool bar, click View -> Tiles.
    4. If you see the connection is listed as "Firewalled", then the firewall may have to be configured.  Check your firewall documentation.
  4. Enter manual settings in the XBOX 360 Dashboard:  (Below mentioned IP addresses are sample addresses)
    • IP Address : 192.168.0.2
    • Subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
    • Default Gateway : 192.168.0.1
    • DNS server (Primary): 192.168.0.1
    • DNS server (Secondary): 192.168.0.1
