How do I connect my Windows XP Media Center (Roll up 2) PC to my Xbox 360?

This article will help you connect your Xbox 360 console to your PC running windows XP Media Center.

Before moving further, ensure that you have Windows XP Media Center 2005 - Rollup 2 as Xbox 360 connection is only possible if you have a rollup version.  It is a free update which is available on Microsoft website.  If you have not upgraded your windows media center to rollup 2, Click here to do so!

For connecting your PC running Windows Media Center to your Xbox 360 console, you must have media sharing software installed. Currently available media sharing software are as follows.  Click to get the steps on how to download and configure each media sharing software:
  1. Windows Media Player 11
  2. Zune
You can use any one of the above to set a connection between your PC and Xbox 360.


Steps to configure Windows Media Player 11:

1. You need to download Windows Media Player 11 to go further.  You can download it from here.

2. Launch Windows Media Player:
  • On your Windows Media center PC, launch Windows Media Player.
  • Click Start -> Windows Media Player.
3. Turn on the Media Sharing:
  • Click the arrow below the Library tab, click Media Sharing.
  • In the Media Sharing dialog box, check the Share my media to box.
  • In the list of devices below the Share my media to check box, select your Xbox 360.
  • click Allow
  • click OK
4. Configure the Xbox 360:
  • Go to the Media section, select Music -> Picture or Photos.
  • Select Computer, press the A button.
  • Select YES, Continue, press the A button.
  • Select your PC, press the A button.
  • Press B button repeatedly until you return to the System section.

Steps for Configuring Zune:


1. You need to download Zune to go further.  You can download it from here.

  • Run the Zune software setup on your PC
  • During Zune setup, you will be prompted to share music, video and pictures on your Xbox.  Select what you need appropriately.


2. Turn on the Media Sharing:

  • In the Zune software, click Options -> Library -> Media Sharing.
  • If you didn't share the media during setup process, select Share my media.
  • Set your media sharing options, then click OK.
  • Click Allow.
  • Click OK.

3. Configure the Xbox 360:
  • Go to the Media section, select Music -> Picture or Photos.
  • Select Computer, press the A button.
  • Select YES, Continue, press the A button.
  • Select your PC, press the A button.
  • Press B button repeatedly until you return to the System section.
