I get the "Invalid Connection Data" error message when I try to connect a Windows Media Center-based computer to an Xbox 360.

This article shows you how to lower the security settings on your computer. But ensure that you take some additional steps to protect your system.

1. Ensure that you have the appropriate connectivity software installed on the Windows Media Center-based computer so that you can connect the computer to the Xbox 360 console. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. You need to Remove any earlier versions of Media Center Extender application. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start -> Run, type "appwiz.cpl".
    2. In the Add or Remove Programs window, click Media Center Extender -> Remove.
    3. After the application is removed, restart the computer.
  2. Install the latest version of Media Center Extender. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. View this article on Zolved.

Note You may be prompted to install the Microsoft Update software if it is not already installed on your PC.  Follow these steps if the system asks you to do so:
      • Click Start Now.
      • On the Review the license agreement page, click Continue.
      • Click Install.
    2. Click Next.
    3. Click Run, and then follow the instructions that appear on the screen to install the software.

2. If you still have problems connecting then disable the firewall on the Windows Media Center-based computer.

Warning: This workaround may make your computer unsafe and can open up the doors to malicious users or malicious software such as viruses to enter. It is not recommended to run this workaround but this information provided so that you can implement this workaround at your own discretion. Use this workaround at your own risk.

Note: This procedure has not been verified to resolve the issue. However, it may help you in identifying whether the problem is with the firewall on your computer or on the network.

To disable the Microsoft Windows Firewall:
  1. Click Start -> Run, type "firewall.cpl", click OK.
  2. On the General tab, select Off (not recommended), click OK.

3. After you disable the Windows Firewall, disconnect the Xbox 360 console from the computer. To do this, you need to follow these steps:

  1. In the System section, select Computers.
  2. Select Windows Media Center, press the A button.
  3. To disconnect the console from the computer, select Disconnect.
  4. Press B button repeatedly until you get back to the System section.
  5. In the System section, select Memory.
  6. Select Hard Drive, select Games, and then select your profile.
  7. Select Xbox 360 Dashboard, select Windows Media Center.
  8. Select Delete, press the A button.
  9. Press B button repeatedly until you get back to the System section.

4. Connect the Windows Media Center-based computer to the Xbox 360 console. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Media Center, click Media Center Extender Manager.
  2. On the File menu, click Add a new Xbox 360.
  3. Follow the instructions and complete the connection to the Xbox 360.

If you have a configuration issue with the firewall.  Use one of the following methods to turn on the firewall or to turn on the filtering software again:
  1. Right-click the icon in the taskbar, click Enable.
  2. If you do not see Enable in the menu of options, contact your firewall or filtering software manufacturer for information on turning on the software
  3. If you don't find the option to turn on the software when you right-click the icon, restart your computer.

This should take care of it!
