Setting up the Wii Remote and Nunchuk

This article explains the procedure for setting up Wii remote and other controllers.

Before you start, ensure you have installed the batteries on your Wii remote.

Click on the option below:

Getting started with your Wii Remote:

  1. Just remove the battery cover from the back of the Wii remote and insert two AA batteries. (Use only high quality alkaline batteries for a better game experience and a long battery life).
  2. Keep an eye on the polarity (+ or -) and ensure it matches as per the instructions on the Wii remote battery compartment.
  3. Replace the battery cover.
  4. Slide your arm through the wrist strap of the Wii remote and adjust the strap lock so that the remote won't fall off from your hand.

Synchronizing the Wii remote with your Wii console:

Synchronizing is a process where you allow your Wii remote to communicate with the Wii console. Generally the remote that is included with your console is already synchronized. However, if you add a new remote, you need to sync it with your console.  Here's how you do it:

There are two ways to Synchronize:
  1. Standard Mode
  2. One Time Mode
Standard Mode:  By using this procedure, you are syncing your remote permanently to your Wii console. This settings can be changed when you overwrite it by synchronizing your remote to a different console.  Following are the steps:

  1. Switch on the console by pressing the power button.
  2. Remove the battery cover on your Wii remote and press the SYNC button which is located just below the batteries.
  3. Press the SYNC button on the front of the console. You can find the button inside the SD Card Slot cover.
  4. Wait for few seconds. The LED on the remote will indicate the player number (1 - 4).
Follow the above steps when you add another Wii Remote.

One Time Mode
:  This is a procedure which removes the Standard Mode settings temporarily until the Wii console is turned off. If console is switched off and then turned back on, it will return to the Standard Mode settings. Following are the steps:

  1. Press the HOME button on the Wii Remote that is synchronized with your console
  2. Select Wii Remote Settings from the Home Button menu.
  3. Select Reconnect.
  4. Press button 1 and 2 simultaneously on your Wii Remote you want to sync with your console. Assume that your remote is Synchronized when the Player LED stops blinking (Follow this same step if you want to sync up another Wii remote).
  5. The player order is determined by the sequence you sync up the remotes. The first remote gets the 1st player option.
