Playstation 3: How to setup your Internet connection

This article helps you in setting up the Internet connection for Playstation 3

To enjoy the online capability of Playstation 3, you need to connect it to the internet.   You can do it in two ways:

  1. Wired Connectivity.
  2. Wireless Connectivity.

Wired Connectivity:

The network configuration and connection depends on the connection method and equipment you have.

Important:  A router would be required if you want your PS3 and the computer to be connected to the internet at the same time.

The following are mandatory.  You need:
  • An Internet connection
  • A cable modem
  • Ethernet cable.  (Available with the PS3)

When you have a wired connection to the Internet, it is not necessary to adjust any of the default settings. (It is done automatically). If you aren't able to connect with the default settings, follow the instructions to adjust the settings.

  1. Select "Network Settings" under "Settings" in the home menu, press the button.
  2. Select "Internet Connection Settings", press the button.
  3. You will be popped with a message stating the Internet connection will be terminated, select Yes, press the button.
  4. Select "Wired Connection", press the button.
  5. Select Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.
    • If you select Easy, then the basic settings are automatically set.
    • If you select Custom, then you need to enter the settings.  Refer the settings supplied by your Internet service provider.

Wireless Connectivity:

The network configuration and connection depends on the connection method and equipment you have.

The following are mandatory.  You need:

  • An Internet connection
  • A cable modem and a router
  • Access point (Not necessary if using a wireless router with built-in wireless functionality)
  • Settings information for the access point (SSID, WEP key, WPA key)

When you try to connect wirelessly to the Internet, First adjust the network settings. These settings may change depending on the type of access point and the network environment you are in.

The following instructions apply most of the network configurations.

  1. Select "Network Settings" under "Settings" in the home menu, press the button.
  2. Select "Internet Connection Settings", press the button.
  3. You will be popped with a message stating the Internet connection will be terminated, select Yes, press the button.
  4. Select "Wireless", press the button.
  5. Select "Scan", press the button.

The system will search for access points within range and display them as a list.
  6. Select the access point that you want to use, press the button. (An SSID is a code or a name that is assigned to the access point. If you have no clue which SSID to use or if the SSID is not displayed, contact the person who set up or maintains the access point.)
  7. Confirm the SSID for the access point, press the right button.
  8. Select the security settings as necessary, press the right button.
  9. Enter the encryption key, press the right button. (The encryption key field will display an asterisk (*) for each character you enter. If you do not know the key, contact the person who set up or maintains the access point).
  10. Select Easy or Custom and adjust the settings.
    • If you select Easy, then the basic settings are automatically set.
    • If you select Custom, then you need to enter the settings.  Refer the settings supplied by your Internet service provider.

hey the reason you can not connection is because your encryption is set to wpa-psk. you have to set the encryption to wep open or wep shared and customize your wep on your router. to get connected. ps3 does not support wpa-psk or wpa2 right now.

            Dear Paul
You must simply put the cable that charges the control on your PS3 and connect it with your PC. I'm not sure but if am I right you need to go to Internet connection setings. go to wired and Easy. Then when you have fixex the options then you should be connected

wep is under custom settings in network setupon ps3 i think its under test section..its the password u used to secure ur modem on ur pc so no one else can use your modem..on the pc its under network settings "choose network" ""enter wep"..there u find ur wep key..same number or word is used for ur wep setting on ps 3 when u access setup-custom,u must enter it manually cause its a password pretty sure its a "custom sttup" -under or above the test area in the "network settings - setup section" on ps3 hope this helps!!

when i go to try to connection test the ip address is succeeded but interner connection failed, at bottom it says error during communications with server. This is a DNS error (80710102) that does this mean. swodj@comcast.net

alright folks i have the answer to all your suffering. it took me about an hour and a half to figure this out. But anywayz, if your problem sounds something similar to this then follow along. Okay so you have a few computers(desktops, or laptops) connected to your router, some wirelessly some wired. doesn't matter. for me, my desktop is wired and laptop is wireless. anyways you get frustrated because when u try to establish a connection on your ps3 with the router it keeps saying that connection test failed because it cannot obtain an ip address even when you KNOW FOR A FACT that the right ssid and wpa had been entered. Okay so i found out the reason why this is happening is because your ps3 is attempting to obtain an ip address but one of your host computers is already using that one so it wont' share the ip address of course. so what you do is go to go on your desktop( the one that gets the error message). click on the start menu, then run, then type cmd. This brings up command prompt. Next you type in "ipconfig /release", you dont' need the parenthesis by the way. This should drop the ip address from that computer, if u don't believe me type in ipconfig again and it would not give u an ip address. Now do this step if you want to understand the tech issue or else just skip to next step. Type in ipconfig /renew, as you can see it will say you cannot renew because theres another device running on it or something like that (little did u know that thats actually your ps3).

Next Step: Turn off that computer and get on your ps3 and set up the wireless connection. you should no longer recieve the message saying "connection failed, cannot obtain ip address". Now you get to go on the internet on your ps3.

Next Next Step: Turn on your computer and the router automatically reassigns that computer the same ip address. Now you can log into the internet on your desktop, laptop, ps3 and any other devices. Oh joy!!!

Btw, these steps worked for me but might not work for you, do not blame me if anything goes wrong. You are welcome to private message me back if you have any questions and i'll try my best to help you out.

Thank you for your steps haumengz_670. It did help to solve my problem but not exactly the way you put it. It helped me noticing something else. The mac address.
The router usually has somekind of network protection, and what it does is that allows access to those devices whose mac addresses are on its list. That should tell you automatically that ps3 mac address is not being considered as a trusty device.
So, what to do if haumengz_670 previous steps didnt work?, add to the router network filtering list the ps3 mac address, and once is added, it automatically give you one IP inside the dhcp range. Repeat the steps to connect the ps3 to the network and voila!
Well, since i don't like to generalize too, i should say it worked for me, and I have a DLink router, and my network before the ps3 consisted of 3 computers, 1 laptop and 1 PSP.
Thank you again dude, really nice guidelines!
