How do I configure a wireless router

This article applies to most common wireless routers (Linksys, D-Link & Netgear)

Follow the simple steps below to configure your wireless router.  These generic steps would work for most of the routers.

Open your Internet Explorer browser and type the address (refer the below table) of your wireless router to configure it.
You are prompted to enter the password (refer router manufacturer's manual for this information).
Check this quick reference table for the router addresses, usernames and passwords of some common routers.

Router Address Username Password
Linksys http://192.168.1.1 admin admin
D-Link http://192.168.0.1 admin (leave blank)
Netgear http://192.168.0.1 admin password
Belkin http://192.168.2.1 (leave blank)
(leave blank)

You should be able to see your router's configuration page.  Most of the default settings should work for you.  You need to only configure three things:

1. Configure SSID:

  • SSID (service set identifier) is your network identifier.  Your network is identified by this name.  You need to choose an unique ID which no one should be using.  Do not complicate it by giving a complex name as this is not a security tool.

2. Configure Wireless encryption (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA):

  • It is simple to configure WEP.  For most of the routers you need to provide the passphrase.
  • Ensure that the phrase is unique and long (it could even be the last phrase you spoke.  You don't need to memorize it).
  • After you create a passphrase, your router creates 4 encrypted keys.
  • Write down only the first key.

3. Change Administrator Password:

  • You need to change your default password for security purposes.
  • Do not use your date of birth or common name as your password.
  • Ensure your password is in combination of words and numbers.

Note: After each setting that you make on your router, ensure you save the changes.

Important:  Now you should disconnect the ethernet cable from your router to PC.

You are done with the router configuration. All you need is to connect your computer to the wireless network which is explained in the next step.
