How to manage multiple libraries in iTunes 7?

This article helps you create and manage multiple libraries on your iTunes 7

First, ensure you have a latest iTunes 7 (Click Help -> About iTunes or download iTunes).

Backup current iTunes files:
The location for these files are in the folder "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\". Save these files to the desktop or on another partition of your harddrive. You need to backup the Library.xml file and your music folder.

Create a new library:

  1. Click on iTunes icon.
  2. Hold down the Shift key (Option key on Macs) and press the Enter key. (Do not release the Shift key).
  3. iTunes should launch a choose library dialog box as shown below. Click on Create Library…

  4. Select a folder name to use as your library folder. (ex: iPod library, My library etc.,)

  5. After iTunes opens, add your music in the folder you created.  Once you are done, close iTunes.
  6. If you want to create another library, then repeat the steps above once again

Choose a specific Library for iTunes:

Now that you have created you folders, if you want to update some music on your iPod then just

  1. Click on the iTunes icon.
  2. Hold down the Shift key and press the Enter key. (Do not release the Shift key)
  3. When the choose library dialog box is shown, click Choose Library and navigate to the folder and open the library file.

Note: The key in the whole process is to hold Shift when clicking the iTunes icon. That will cause the Choose Library box to show up.

Important:  Do the above steps at your own risk.  No one can be held responsible if you loose data.
