Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\iTunes.msi

A common error message when trying to reinstall/upgrade a software program (like iTunes etc). Here's a way to avoid getting it:

This message usually means a previous installation of a software is getting in the way of the new installation.  It's kinda nutty that this would cause a problem, but we live in a nutty world.  The fix is to download a free program from Microsoft that will totally and completely remove the old software.  Then the new version can load unimpeded.

1. Download: Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility

2. Choose Save file option in the popup dialogue box

3. A File by name Msicuu.exe will be downloaded on your system

4. Run the Msicuu.exe application. This will install the program.

5. Run the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility file you just loaded (Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up or C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up double click msicuu.exe

6. You will see window listing various applications.

7. Select the offending program, then click Remove. You'll see the warning box, select OK. The utility will remove all the parts of the program from your computer.

8. Restart your computer, then try loading the new version of the software.

For iTunes:

While we were at it, we decided to throw in the iTunes specific instructions because, well you know, those iPodders are special people (I'm one!).

When you get to step 6 above, highlight iTunes and click Remove, then select OK on the warning box.

For good measure, remove Apple Software Update and Quicktime (the iTunesSetup.exe will re-install those also).

The nice thing about this process is that it leaves all your music in tact! The My Music folder is not deleted in the process.

The steps above should take care of your problem. If you still have issues where windows prompts "earlier version of iTunes cannot be removed" or something of that sort then, follow the steps below:

  1. On your windows task pane, right-click and open Task Manager.

  2. Click on Process tab and ensure all the processes related to iTunes and iPod are closed.  To do this:
    • Click once on the name of the process and click End Process.

  3. Reboot your PC.

Note:  You need to close iTuneshelper, iPodservice, iTunes.exe.  Also do run a Virus and Spyware scan.

A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file C:\Windows\Installer\iTunes.msi .
Yes Im getting this error too. It says that i have to relocate such file as this iTunes.msi . Well ofc i dont find it on my computer so i followed the guide here. I tried to some else programs too that were said to fix the itunes error.
    I ran
Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (removed every iPod,Quicktime,iTunes,Apple files)
CCleaner (made the search with this software and cleaned everything it scanned)
RegSeeker (searched with all keywords(iPod,iTunes etc. and removed everything I could find)
I also removed manually everything reminding of these softwares ( Also removed C:/windows/installers/(everything i found here).

I would think that this would solve my problem, well it didn't. Now installer wont say that i need to find the iTunes.msi file, but it just comes with error window that says that earlier version of iTunes cannot be removed, even I have removed everything that I can. Please help me, I cant load my ipod with the newest musics.

I followed the instructions here: http://www.daitengu.com/2007/03/23/howto-fix-the-missing-itunesmsi-problem-on-windows/ and it worked flawlessly. They seem to be a bit less complicated, but similar in essence.

FYI, the process you are performing is not actually removing the software from the computer, it is just deleting the references to the application in the Windows Installer database on that PC. The software is still technically installed, it's just that the files and registry entries are no longer being maintained by Windows Installer
