How can I get to play on Xbox Live?

Here's what you have to do to get your Xbox 360 on Xbox Live.

Getting setup to play online, on Xbox Live,  requires several things. Here's what you need:
  1. An Xbox or Xbox 360.
  2. A high-speed internet connection (either cable or dsl).
  3. A Windows Live ID (or Passport account/Hotmail account).
  4. A Xbox Live Profile.
  5. A nice comfy chair.
We'll assume you already have #1 (why else would you be here?) and #2 (how else could you get here?).  While we'd love to go shopping for #5 with you, we just help you with #3 and #4 and leave it at that.

For both 3 and 4, it is way faster to do these on a normal computer (even Microsoft recommends this) and not through the Xbox. It's just easier with a normal keyboard and mouse. Go to http://www.xbox.com/en-US/live and go through the process. Here are some tips for the process:

 - Xbox Live for Xbox 360 has a different set of prerequisites than Xbox Live for the original Xbox video game system has. This article describes those prerequisites.

- Live-enabled profile:
  • An Xbox 360 Memory Unit or Xbox 360 Hard Drive to store profile information about the Xbox 360 console.
  • An e-mail address
  • A Gamertag, here are the traits of a Gamertag:
    • 1 to 15 characters long (a through z, A through Z, 0 through 9, or spaces).
    • Must start with a letter, cannot include more than one consecutive space, cannot end in a space.

 - The Windows Live ID account must contain the following information:

  • Country
  • Language
  • Birth date
  • First and last name
  • Alternative contact e-mail address
  • Secret question
  • Secret answer
  • Telephone number
  • Acceptance of the Xbox Live terms of use

Note Users age 12 and under, or 13 and under in Korea, have the following additional requirements:

  • A parent's Windows Live ID account
  • Consent from a parent to play on Xbox Live
  • Credit card information
    • First name and last name
    • Card type
    • Card number
    • Expiration date
