How to manage browser add-ons with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)

This article explains how to manage browser add-ons with XP SP2

Before you start, ensure you have the Service Pack 2 version of Windows XP.   Not sure how to check it?  don't worry.  Here's how you do it:

  • From your task pane go to Start -> Right click on My Computer and click Properties.

  • under General tab you will find your XP version.

Still don't have the Service Pack 2? Click here for steps on getting it.  The Service Pack 2 gives you control on your add-ons to Internet Explorer.  This helps you in controlling your browser and prevents any malicious or spy attacks.

If you already have SP2 then follow the steps below:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. On the menu click on Tools -> Internet Options.

  3. Click Programs tab and click Manage Add-ons.

  4. You will be shown a list of add-ons that are on your PC.

  5. Go through one by one and click on anything suspicious you find and select Disable radio button.  Especially look at Browser Helper Objects and Extensions.  You can get these back later if you need it.

You might also want to look at using other browsers like Mozilla Firefox that limits the threats of many spywares and viruses.
