Firefox is crashing.... how can I fix it?

Firefox might crash due to several reasons, there is no straight answer to this question. The following steps would give you some steps that might take care of your problem.

Firefox commonly crashes when:
  • You are using the VLC Media Player plugin and view VMW media - The VLC Media player includes its own browser plugin so, it conflicts with the WMP plugin and hence causes a crash.  Remove the VLC plugin (from add remove programs in the control panel for windows).
  • Downloading files - The Download History file might also force Firefox to crash.  To fix this, close the browser, search for "downloads.rdf" and delete this file from your hard disk(you need to also search for hidden and system files).
Update Firefox:

It is always good to get the recent updates downloaded onto the browser as it has recent bug fixes.  You can download the latest versions of Firefox from Mozilla.com.
  • If you are using Firefox 2.0 or greater, the latest updates can be downloaded and installed from within Firefox. Simply click on Help -> Check for Updates from the menu bar.
  • If you are using an older version of Firefox, it is better to upgrade your Firefox to the latest version (version 2.0).  That should give your browser a reset from all those problematic files and add-ons.
Update Extensions:

Whenever a new browser version is released, you need to update the extensions so that they are compatible.  It is always better to install the most recent version of any extension irrespective of the browser version you are using.  Here's how you do it:
  • If you are using Firefox 2.0 or greater,
    1. From the menu bar, click on Tools -> Add-ons.

    2. Click on Extensions and then on Find updates.

    3. If an update is found, then a dialog box will appear to update all at once.
  • If you are using an older version of Firefox,

    1. From the menu bar, click on Tools -> Options.
    2. Click on Advanced panel.
    3. Locate the Check Now button under the heading Software Update.
    4. Check  My Extensions and Themes check box.
You might not find all the updates through the browser update system.   You may also manually find extensions at the following sites (Optional): It is not advisable to install extensions from the sites other than Mozilla update.  Do it at your own risk.

Update Plug ins.

Plug ins are as important as extensions.  This program allows you to see multimedia content such as video's animations and sounds etc.,  Get the latest plug ins from:

Plugins are known to cause crashing in Firefox if they are not updated often.  If you want to check the list of plugins that exist on your Firefox browser:

  • Type about:plugins in the address bar and press Enter.

Final steps
:

If you tried all the above and still have problems, then try the steps below to find the problem:

    * Try the standard diagnostic.

If you are still experiencing crashing after working through this guide, please leave a comment in the comment box that you see on the left or you can submit details to the Mozilla Firefox Support forum (registration is not required).
