I get an error message when trying to activate Windows Vista: "An error has occurred"

The article helps in troubleshooting the error codes you might receive while activating Vista.

Symptom:

When trying to activate Windows Vista, you might receive the following error message with one of the error codes given in the following table:

"An error has occurred"

Error code Description
0xC004C003 The activation server determined that the specific product key is in use.
0xC004C001 The activation server determined that the specific product key is invalid.
0xC004C008 The activation server determined that the specific product key could not be used.
0xC004C812 SL_E_CHREF_BINDING_0UT_0F_T0LERANCE: The activation server determined that the specific product key has exceeded its activation count.
0xCD004F050 The Software Licensing Service reported that the specific product key is invalid.
0xC004C4CE Unable to find a detailed error description.
0x80072328 DNS name does not exist.
0xC004F027 The Software Licensing Service reported that the license is tampered.
0xC003E004 The Software Licensing Service reported that the license has not been evaluated.
0xC004E003 The Software Licensing Service reported that the license evaluation failed.
0xC004F033 The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key is not allowed to be installed. Please see the event log for details.
0XC004D401 The security processor reported a system file mismatch error.
0x80080250 Unrecognized error.
0x8004FC03 unrecognized error.
0X8004FE2D HTTP_STATUS_DENIED.
0x8004FE33 HTTP_STATUS_PROXY_AUTH_REQ.
0x8004FE91 HTTP_STATUS_NOT_SUPPORTED.
0x80072EE7 The server name or address could not be resolved.
0x80072EFD A connection with the server could not be established.
0x80072F78 The server returned an invalid or unrecognized response.
0x80072F8F A security error occurred.

Resolution:

1. Error codes 0xC004C003, 0xC004C001, 0xC004C008, 0xC004C812, 0xCD004F050, 0xC004C4CE, 0xC004F027, 0xC003E004, and 0xC004E003 and 0x80072328:

If you get one of the above error codes, you need to change the product key to active Vista.  Here's how you do it:

  1. Click Start, key in "system" in Start Search box.
  2. In Programs list, click System.



  3. In the Windows activation section, click the Change product key link.  If you are asked for an administrator password, key it in.


  4. Key in the product key In the Product key field, click Next.
  5. Follow the steps in the Windows Activation Wizard to complete the activation process.

Note:  You can follow the above steps again for reactivation of  Windows Vista.

2. Error code 0xC004F033:

If you get this error,  recheck the product key.  Also check whether your computer matches the Minimum System Requirements for Vista.

3. Error codes 0XC004D401, 0x80080250:

If you get this error code, it means that the anti-virus program's Digital Rights Management (DRM) is not matching with Windows Vista.  In simple words, it is not compatible with Windows Vista.  You need to contact the anti-virus manufacturer to obtain a version that is compatible with Window Vista, and then reactivate the OS.

4. Error codes 0x8004FC03, 0X8004FE2D, 0x8004FE33, 0x8004FE91, 0x80072EE7, 0x80072EFD, 0x80072F78, and 0x80072F8F:

Check whether your internet connection is working or not.   Try reactivating Vista. 

  1. Click Start, and then click Help and Support.


  2. In the Search Help box or in the Search online Help box, key in Troubleshoot network and Internet connection problems, and then click Search Help.

  3. In the list of topics, click Troubleshoot network and Internet connection problems.

  4. Click the link that best explains your problem. 
  5. Follow the suggestions and try to troubleshoot the problem.

    i followed the steps you told for the error Error Code 0xC004E003 and i still receive the same message...what can i do? pls help
