Migrating files and settings from my Old PC to new Windows Vista computer

This article tells us the different methods through which we can migrate files and settings from windows computer to Windows Vista

I  was very excited last weekend that I got a new computer with Microsoft Vista installed in it. It looked very classy with some awesome features and graphics. I was playing around with the computer when I realized that my all settings and files are in my old XP computer. My jaws dropped down thinking that I might loose all data. Scratching my head, I called up Pete, my techno friend, to ask him if there is any way I can migrate files and settings from my previous Windows-based computer to my new Vista-based computer. I was thrilled to hear that we can do it and there are lots of ways to do it. I did it and it worked, I have all my settings and files in my new Vista computer. Let me discuss the steps with you elaborately.

I was so happy to know that I can migrate all the following: -
  • Files and folders
  • Music pictures and videos
  • Internet settings and favorites
  • E mail settings like contacts and messages
  • Program settings
  • User accounts and settings
And amazingly we have Four different ways to migrate files and settings: -
  1. Use a USB cable that connects the Windows-based computer to the Windows Vista-based computer.
  2. Establish a network connection between the Windows-based computer and the Windows Vista-based computer.
  3. Use removable media such as a USB flash drive or an external hard disk. We can connect either of these to the Windows-based computer and to the Windows Vista-based computer.
  4. Use a CD or a DVD burner in the Windows-based computer and blank media so that you can burn the files and settings to a disc. Then, we can transfer the files and settings to Windows Vista
In addition, we can also use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings for all the users on the single source computer. (The Old computer where our files and settings are stored)

Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings

Hey!! We need to make a note here that Windows Easy Transfer supports migration from the following operating systems only:

• Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (SP4)
• Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2)
• Windows Vista

Prepare for the migration on the destination computer (the new Vista Computer where we want to migrate out files and settings)
To start Windows Easy Transfer on the destination computer, we need to follow the following steps:
  1. Let's close all active programs.
  2. Click on Start button - All Programs - click Accessories - click System Tools - click Windows Easy Transfer and then click next.
  3. Click Start a new transfer to make Windows Easy Transfer. It prepares to collect information from the computers.
  4. Click This is my new computer.
  5. Select the destination media you want to store the Windows Easy Transfer wizard files. You can store the wizard files on a CD, on a DVD, on removable media, or on a network drive.
  6. Click Network drive.

Let me tell you here that to store the wizard files on a CD, on a DVD, or on removable media, the source computer that is our old computer and the destination computer that is our new computer must both support the migration method that we select. For example, if we want to migrate files and settings by using a CD or a DVD, the destination computer must also have a CD or a DVD drive. If we want to migrate files and settings by using the network, both the source computer and the destination computer must have access to the same network.
  7. Lets type a path and a folder name in which we want to store the Windows Easy Transfer wizard files, and then click next. (The default path is C:\migwiz.)
Migrate files and settings from the source computer to the destination computer by using one of the following four migration methods.

Method 1: Using a USB cable that can connect two computers to migrate files and settings

  3. Click Next.
  4. Click through a network.
  5. Click Connect directly via network to start the migration.

Please make a note here to Click Save to network location if you want to store the files and the settings in a file that will be loaded later. 7. Click next after we are done with the CD or DVD.
  8. Lets click Close after Windows Easy Transfer has completely moved the files and the settings.
  9. Put the CD or DVD in the destination computer.
  10. Lets click start Windows Easy Transfer, and then click Next.
