Generally this message will follow with some additional message that would actually describe why this error occurred.  This might happen when you try upgrading Windows XP that is installed on a FAT32 file system.   You need to convert this to NTFS file system as Vista only works on it.

Here's how you convert the hard disk partition from FAT32 to NTFS.

It is always good to backup all important data before you move ahead.

  1. Click Start -> Run, type "cmd" or "command", click OK.

  2. In command prompt, key in "convert driveletter:/FS:NTFS". (For ex:- if you want to convert drive C to NTFS, you type, "convert C:/FS:NTFS").

  3. After this is done, restart Windows Vista Installation.

When running this command, you might receive an error message as follows:

"Convert cannot gain exclusive access to the drive_letter:, so it cannot convert it now. Would you like to schedule it to be converted the next time the system restarts (Y/N)?"

The reason for the above might be due to:

  • You might have run the above command from the same drive that you are trying to convert.  Do the following to fix it:
    • Click Yes on the error message and restart your PC.  The process would start as soon as the computer restarts.
    • Switch to another partition on your hard disk and then retype the above command again:
      • If you are converting C to NTFS, then
        • At the command prompt type, d:
        • Then type, convert C:/FS:NTFS

  • There might be a file that is open on the partition that is getting converted:
    • Click Yes on the error message and restart your PC.  The process would start as soon as the computer restarts.
    • Exit all the programs that is invoked from that drive.
    • If you have a network connected, ensure that you have not opened any files of the same partition from any other computer.
  • You might be trying to convert a partition which has your operating system running.  You cannot convert a partition where an active operating system is running. However, if you want to convert a boot partition, follow the steps below:
    • Click Yes on the error message and restart your PC.  See whether the process starts as soon as the computer restarts.
    • If you have another version of  Windows installed on another partition, restart the computer by using the other version and convert the partition that Windows is no longer using.
