What are the different User Accounts in Windows Vista?
This article gives you an overview of managing the user accounts in Vista. It also helps you to create Administrator Account and Standard Account in Windows Vista.
In windows Vista, it is very easy to share a single computer by different users. Each user can have a separate account with their own customized settings and preferences.
You can create two types of accounts in Vista.
Administrator Account:
Standard Account:
Managing account settings:
When you start Windows Vista, you will only be able to access your computer with a help of your account and password (if you have created it before) on the welcome screen.

You can create two types of accounts in Vista.
- Administrator Account.
- Standard Account.
Administrator Account:
- This account is created first when Vista gets installed on your computer.
- It gives full access to your computer.
- Accessibility of the other existing user accounts on your computer is possible with Administrator rights.
Standard Account:
- This account lets you work with your own files.
- Standard accounts wouldn't have access to any other accounts.
- No access to other account files or settings.
Managing account settings:
When you start Windows Vista, you will only be able to access your computer with a help of your account and password (if you have created it before) on the welcome screen.
To manage your account settings,
- Click Start -> Control Panel.

- Click User Accounts and Family Safety.

- Click User Accounts.

- You can see the type of account you are using here.
Important: This is the screen where you can change all the settings on your account. If you notice a
(shield logo) beside the option, it means that the option needs administrator password to make changes.
If you click on that option that has a
, Vista would prompt you to enter the administrator password.

Creating a New Account:
Note: Ensure that you are logged on in an user account which has administrator privileges.
- Click Start -> Control Panel.

- Click User Accounts and Family Safety.

- Click User Accounts.

- Click Manage another account.

- You will be prompted to enter the Administrator password.
Note: You can manage an existing account settings or create a new account from this screen, if you want to create a new account,
- Click Create a new account.

- Now, key in the name for the new account and choose the account type.
- You may need to choose the account type as Standard Account and click Create Account.

- When this is done, create a password by clicking on the newly created account.
- If you want to switch to another account, just click on Start -> Log off.

- You should be able to see the welcome screen with different user accounts.
