How to use the Apple Remote Control

This article explains the functions of the Apple remote control when used with the Apple TV and when used with the computer

The Apple Remote works on an infrared-based transmitter. The Apple Remote can function at distances of up to 30 feet with line of sight. The Apple Remote uses a CR2032 coin battery. Apple TV or Mac OS X will display a warning icon when the remote's battery gets low.

First of all lets discuss about the Apple Remote, which is used with the Apple TV.

There are six buttons, which controls the Apple TV.
  1. Menu
  2. Select/Play/Pause
  3. Menu up/scroll
  4. Menu down/scroll
  5. Next/Fast-Forward
  6. Previous/Rewind

Lets explain the functions more in details: -
  1. Press Menu up/scroll (+) or Menu down/scroll (-) to move through the menu options.
  2. Press Select/Play/Pause button to select an option from a menu.
  3. Press the Menu button to return to a previous menu.
  4. Press and hold Menu to return to the main menu.
  5. Press and hold Select/Play/Pause for about 6 seconds to put Apple TV in standby mode.
  6. Press and hold Menu and Menu down/scroll (-) for about 6 seconds and then choose restart from the menu to Restart Apple TV.
  7. Press and hold Menu and Menu up/scroll (+) for about 6 seconds to cycle through all video modes.
Now lets discuss lets discuss about the Apple Remote, which is used with the Computer.

Like Apple TV remote it has six buttons:
  1. Menu
  2. Select/Play/Pause
  3. Volume Up
  4. Volume Down
  5. Next/Fast-Forward
  6. Previous/Rewind


Let's explain the functions more in details: -
  1. Press the Menu button to open Front Row and play songs, slideshows, movies, movie trailers, and music videos.
  2. Press the Menu button again to return to the previous menu.
  3. Press the Volume Up (+) and Volume Down (-) buttons to navigate through the menu options, or adjust the volume when playing an audio or video file.
  4. Press the Select/Play/Pause button to select an option from the menu.
  5. Press the Previous/Rewind button to skip to the previous track.
  6. Press the Next/Forward button to skip to the next track.
  7. Press the Select/Play/Pause button for three seconds to put the Mac to sleep. You can press any button on the remote to get it back again.
