How to pair and un-pair the Apple Remote with Apple TV

This article explains how to pair and un-pair Apple remote with Apple TV

The Apple Remote works with the built in IR Receiver on Apple TV. If we pair Apple TV and the remote, it ensures that Apple TV will be controlled by only one remote.

Follow the following two simple steps to pair Apple TV with the included remote.
  1. Choose Settings from the Apple TV main menu.
  2. Choose Pair Remote Control.
There is also one another way to pair it. You just need to press and hold the Menu and Next or Fast-forward buttons for 6 seconds to pair Apple TV and the remote. Once you are done with the pairing, you will see a chain link symbol above a picture of a remote in the settings. It means that this Apple TV will work only with the paired remote.

Now lets check how to un-pair Apple TV and remote.
The interesting point is that unfortunately if you someday lose the Apple Remote that you paired with Apple TV, a replacement remote will not work until you un-pair Apple TV from the lost remote. You can use any Apple Remote to un-pair Apple TV from the lost remote by pressing and holding the Menu and Previous/Rewind buttons for 6 seconds. Well you just need the following two steps.

  1. Choose Settings from the Apple TV main menu.
  2. Choose Un-pair Remote.
Once you are done this time you will see a broken chainlink symbol above a picture of a remote. Now again you can pair Apple TV with a new remote.
